The League of Tourism Students of the Philippines (LSTP) – University of Baguio Chapter in cooperation with the Tourism Educators and Movers of the Philippines (TEAM Phils.) and the University of Baguio (UB) hosted the 5th National League of Tourism Students’ Convention with the theme, “Transforming Philippines As a Prime Tourist Destination” conducted last February 8, 2012 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Baguio Country Club.

This convention is geared towards addressing the Industry’s dynamic changes in hospitality and tourism education with the following specific objectives:

1. To update student participants, educators, and other tourism stakeholders on the current trends and practices in the tourism industry.

2. To create positive awareness among the tourism stakeholders vis-à-vis the importance of tourism in national economic development.

3. To promote and strengthen cooperation among hospitality and tourism institutions, faculty members and students;

4. To improve and standardize hospitality and tourism education in the country.

Notable personalities relevant to the Tourism and Hospitality industry were the distinguished speakers on this event. They were: Puerto Princesa City Mayor, Hon. Edward Hagedorn, who presented on the challenges and success in making the Underground River One of the World’s New Seven Wonders of Nature; Ms. Katherine de Castro, TV Host / Journalist of the travel show Trip na Trip of the Bayan Production inspired the conventioneers on how to promote domestic tourism in our country by travelling within our means; Mr. Farid Schoucair, the General Manager of New World Makati City Manila Hotel shared their hotel’s best practices in its operations; Mr. Warner Andrada, the Chief Operations Officer of Department of Tourism’s Office of Product Research and Development (OPRD) disseminated an update of the Philippine Tourism Industry; and Mr. Robert Lim Joseph, the Chairman of TEAM Philippines discussed on international protocol when receiving guests or VIPs.

This convention was attended by various colleges and universities in Northern Luzon and NCR. From Saint Mary’s University, 19 junior Tourism students participated with Tourism instructor Ms. Lovely Edelweiss B. Julian and HTM Department Head Mrs. Mayvelyn S. Covita . The students truly enjoyed the new learning and discoveries relevant to the field of specialization they are pursuing. In fact, they look forward to next year’s convention, which TEAM Philippines announced, would be an international event.
