Besting contestants from the Nueva Vizcaya State University and the PLT College, Saint Mary’s University staged a “three-peat championship” in the Provincial Tour Guiding Competition, held annually by the Tourism Promotions and Development Division under the Office of the Provincial Governor of Nueva Vizcaya.

Senior Tourism students Mr. Jos Dado C. Bascos placed first, while Ms. Julie Ann Syria IC A. Macayanan, emerged third in the competition held on September14, 2012. All contestants were required to prepare their individual spiels that would give tourists substantial information regarding the natural wonders and cultural diversity of Nueva Vizcaya.

On board the Nueva Vizcaya bus following the Bayombong (Provincial Capitol) – Diadi (Paraiso Tribu Vizcayano) route, the contestants individually delivered their tour-guiding spiel to the judges and the audience who consisted of students from the participating schools. Aside from the rolling tour, the competition focused on the walking tour within the Paraiso Tribu Vizcayano, where they were allotted an hour each to highlight the various facilities and features of the new tourist attraction in the province.

The criteria for the competition were: communication and public speaking skills, fluency in English 30%; knowledge / mastery on information / accuracy of facts or information 30%; personality & techniques in delivering tour guiding skills, 25%; and over all impact & presentation 15%.

The judges for this competition were: Mr. Genaro B. Basilio Jr., the Public Affairs and Information Assistance Division Chief of PLGU Nueva Vizcaya; Mr. Victor Martin, NV Press Club President; and Ms. Bernadette Guttierez, the Saniata ti Tribu Nueva Vizcaya 2012.

Mr. Bascos and Ms. Macayanan were coached by the HTM Department Head Mrs. Mayvelyn S. Covita, HTM faculty Ms. Lovely Edelweiss B. Julian and former HTM part-time instructor Mr. Sherween Jerry Paul V. Saquing. Mrs. Joanne Katherine F. Reyes, the Secretary to the Dean of the School of Business, accompanied the competitors on the said event.

In the provincial tourism quiz bee held a week earlier on September 7, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the Ammungan Hall, SMU was represented by Ms. Nicola P. Managuelod, a junior Tourism student.
