With the objective of complementing the theories learned at school, the HTM department annually conducts an educational tour for the freshmen both for HRM and Tourism students for them to be able to experience first-hand how do the various Tourism components are packaged. Last September 14-15, 2012, the group headed to Subic with the sidetrip done on the first day to Bataan visiting the Dambana ng Kagitingan at Mt. Samat. The group consisted of 255 students, including around 80 junior Tourism students enrolled in Domestic Tourism (Tour 312) and Air, Sea, Land & Travel Sales Management (Tour 316), who joined the tour to personally visit not only the attractions as planned on the itinerary but also to observe how tour guides conduct their professions. For the freshmen, this tour is integrated on their subject Fundamentals of Tourism & Hospitality Management (Tour 111a).

Faculty-chaperones included the HTM Department Head, Mrs. Mayvelyn S. Covita together with all the full-time instructors and HTM department’s laboratory staff: Mr. Michael Noel A. Abiva, Mr. Epifanio Reiner R. Mariano III, Mr. Marvin G. Eslava, Mrs. Janette M. Arellano, Ms. Lovely Edelweiss B. Julian, Mrs. Evelyn S. Tiongson, Ms. Davie Gamponia, Mrs. Carmencita G. Acuña, Mr. George Rawson A. Guiab, and Mr. Harrison T. Villanueva, the representative of the School of Business’ OIC, Dr. Eleanor C. Domingo.

The group left SMU grounds at around 11:00 in the evening of September 13. The following day, after breakfast at a food chain restaurant in Subic, the group headed to Mt. Samat in Bataan. Despite the drizzle for both days that the group was on tour, the activities and places to be visited as planned were all seen. At Mt. Samat, the students and faculty-chaperones climbed up to the cross. This national shrine is located near the summit of the Mountain in the town of Pilar. The memorial shrine complex was built to honor and remember the gallantry of Filipino and American soldiers who fought during World War II. After few hours of worthwhile historical reminiscing at the Dambana ng Kagitingan, the group left for lunch at a restaurant near the Subic International Hotel, where they were billeted.

One of the highlights of this educational tour was a seminar which discussed the Tourism situation of Subic, and included an actual demonstration of housekeeping’s bed-making of the said hotel.

The second day was devoted to nature sightseeing at some of Subic’s leading and popular attractions: the Pamulaklakin Forest Trail, Ocean Adventure and the Zoobic Safari. The students were reacquainted with the importance of the marine life and significant wildlife in the forest as these should be conserved for sustainable development. Real jungle and marine animals were showcased coupled with educational presentations and exhibits encouraging the spectators to care for nature of which they are an essential part.
